Recommended fixing method is by bonding. Best results are obtained using a contact adhesive such as neoprene glue.
Other possible adhesives include: neoprene adhesive and polyurethane adhesive for wooden boats. For composite boats, it is recommended to test the adhesive first; if it does not work, epoxy adhesives are always suitable.
Procedure using neoprene adhesive: (subject to the specifications provided by the adhesive manufacturer)
– Cut a strip equal to the length of the daggerboard case, plus 125 mm at each end.
– Round off the corners of the lip using a pair of scissors.
– Prepare the ends of the lip to be fitted.
– Cut two small lips, making sure to round them off. These small lips will overlap the main lip at each end.
– Position the main lip on the hull and hold it in place using tape at each end.
Using a grease pencil, mark the outline of the area to be bonded.
For better bonding, it is recommended to lightly sand the hull using sandpaper.
– Apply adhesive to both surfaces (hull and lip). Make sure the glue is applied in a thin layer and fully covers all bonding areas.
– When the adhesive is touch-dry, join the two glued surfaces. Using a cloth, press the lip onto the hull to avoid air bubbles.
– Using a cutter, cut the installed lip along the length of the daggerboard case. It is not necessary to make a hole at each end.
– Clean off any excess adhesive.
This lip is very durable and does not tear under normal use. The period during which the lip is folded by the daggerboard when it is lowered is significantly shorter than when the daggerboard is raised.
