How do i repair my trampoline?
The trampoline : A Key Element of Comfort and Safety on a Sailboat
The trampoline is an essential element of comfort and safety on a sailboat, especially on catamarans. Over time, it can wear out, lose tension, or tear.
Here are the keys steps to effectively diagnose and repair your trampoline.
Diagnosing the Condition of the Trampoline
Before starting any repair, carry out a thorough inspection :
- Mesh or fabric : worn areas, abrasions, holes, or tears
- Stiching : broken threads, seams coming undone
- Bolt ropes or side straps : loosened, frayes, or damaged
- Eyelets : misshapen, missing, or coming loose
- Tensioning system (ropes, carabiners, bungees) : wear or loss of tension
Tip : inspect the trampoline when it is dry and properly tensioned.
Repairing a tear in the fabric
Small holes or tears (< 3cm)
- Clean the area thoroughly
- Use a repair patch designed for mesh or technical fabric
- Attach it according to the material : light to improve durability
Large tears
- Sew a reinforcement patch using UV-resistant polyester thread
- Reinforce both sides if possible to improve durability
If the tear is close to an edge, it may be necessary to reinstall the bolt rope.
Warning : A severely torn trampoline can become dangerous. In this case, consult a professional.
Repairing or Reinforcing Stitching
- Remove damaged or weakened threads
- Restitch using :
- A sewing machine suitable for technical materials
- UV-resistant polyester thread
For high-stress areas, add extra reinforcement (webbing straps or heavy-duty fabric)
Replacing a Damaged Eyelet
- Remove the old eyelet using appropriate pliers
- Install a stainless steel or brass eyelet (corrosion-resistant)
- Secure it with a press or eyelet pliers
- Check its strength before re-tensioning the trampoline
Repairing or Replacing Bolt Ropes ans Side Straps
If a bol trope is frayed or torn :
- Unpick the damaged section
- Replace it with a new webbing strip
- Sew it back using UV-resistant thread
Ensure the tension is even around the entire perimeter.
Checking and Adjusting the Tensioning System
A trampoline often loses effectiveness due to improper tension.
Check :
- Ropes : worn, fuzzy, or slack
- Carabiners or shackles : corrosion or deformation
- Bungee cords : rubber fatigue
Replace components if necessary.
Re-tension evenly to avoid weak points.
A properly tensioned trampoline improves safety and significantly extends the lifespan of the fabric.
Preventing Future Repairs
- Rinse regularly with fresh water to remove salt
- Avoid walking on it with abrasive footwear
- Re-tension slighty if the fabric loosens over time
- Protect the trampoline during long periods of inactivity
