How do i repair my sail?

A well-maintained sail ensures good performance, safe sailing, and extends the lifespan of your rigging. Below are the essential steps to diagnose and repair the most common issues.

Diagnosing the condition of the sail

Before starting any repair, carefully inspect :

• The sailcloth : tears, worn areas, abrasions, deep creases
• Stitching : broken threads, seams coming apart
• Reinforcements : sail corners, UV protection strips, chafe areas
• Battens and batten pockets : broken battens, opened or worn pockets
• Attachment points : grommets, head, tack, clew damage

Tip : Lay the sail flat, clean, and dry in a spacious, well-lit area.

Repairing a tear in the sailcloth

Small tears (< 5cm)

• Clean and dry the area thoroughly
• Use a self-adhesive sail repair patch (Dacron, laminate…)
• Apply the patch on both sides for better strenght

Medium to large tears

• Sew on a reinforcement patch
• Use UV-resistant polyester thread
• Respect the load direction of the sail fibers

If the tear is close to a seam or reinforcement, a full repair of the area is recommended.

For heavily loaded or structurally damaged sails, professional repair is advised.

Restitching or reinforcing seams

• Remove damaged or weakned threads
• Restitch using :

UV-resistant polyester thread

• For high-stress areas (leech, foot, reinforcements), add a reinforcement strip

Repairing or replacing a grommet

• Remove the damaged grommet using appropriate pliers
• Install a stainless steel or brass grommet resistant to corrosion
• Secure it with a press
• Check strength before re-tensioning the sail

Checking and repairing reinforcement and UV strips

• Inspect UV protection strips for stitching failure, discoloration, or tears
• If worn, replacement is recommended to prevent rapid sail degradation
• Check reinforcement patches at load points (head, tack, clew)

Preventing future repairs

• Rinse the sail regularly with fresh water to remove salt
• Avoid unnecessary flogging of the sail
• Always dry the sail before folding or storing it
• Store it away from moisture and UV exposure during the off-season
